Required Materials:
1. Notebook with lined paper and your math notes.
2. A Pencil.
3. Assignment from the previous day.
4. A calculator for home use. Calculators will be provided for classroom use.
Student Responsibilities:
1. Be on time with your materials and completed assignment.
(There will be some kind of homework most school nights with few exceptions.)
2. Show your thinking on all assignments and tests.
3. Respect yourself, others, and our learning environment.
4. Turn in your work on time!
Homework assignments are always due the next school day. However, students may take an extra day or two to work on an assignment if it will help. Students that are absent have two days for every day absent to complete missed work. 25% credit reduction for each week an assignment is late. No work accepted after end of quarter!
Citizenship:
1. Honors (H) Indicates excellent behavior, participation, and a positive attitude.
2. Satisfactory (S) Indicates good behavior and a cooperative attitude.
3. Needs Improvement (N) Indicates behaviors or attitudes that require teacher correction.
4. Unsatisfactory (U) Indicates student does not respond to teacher correction.
Grading:
Approximately 50% of the student’s points will come from homework and 50% from tests.
100% to 94% = A 93% to 90% = A- 89% to 86% = B+ 85% to 82% = B 81% to 78% = B-
77% to 74% = C+ 73% to 70% = C 69% to 66% = C- 65% to 62% = D+ 61% to 58% = D
57% to 54% = D- Less than 54% = F
Assessment:
Students may make corrections and retake tests. A test may only be retaken once and must be retaken before or after school. These rules apply to a test missed due to an absence. The days I am available for extra help and test retakes are posted in the classroom. An activity bus is available to bus students that stay after school.
Extra credit assignments will occasionally be made available to the entire class. Extra credit points are usually available on tests. Assignments are often worksheets that have a code so that students can self-monitor their progress. Other kinds of assignments will be corrected in class. Projects that that meet the needs and interests of individual students will be available.
Curriculum:
We will be using a combination of the Glenco Geometry and Algebra textbooks along with other resources. These include teacher made handouts and also worksheets from Marcy Mathworks. We will also use an online text available for free at utahmiddleschoolmath.org. Our major focus will be on four critical areas: (1) developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (2) developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations; (3) solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume; and (4) drawing inferences about populations based on samples.
